My very good friend Renne' Toney is doing the Worlds in Brazil I didn't know you knew her. I guess you've been around. I have read different things about her, but usually bad. What was written in "Picturing The Modern Amazon" by Joanna Frueh and Laurie Fierstein had to be an objective presentation. What is she like?-that is a totally unloaded question.

Yes I would like to know more about this amazing woman! I have only seen a few pictures of her displaying so much muscle.

Thanks
Hanne

Maxt, She is the sweetest, mellowest individual I've meet in all my yrs of BBing.
She does the session work, so this has allowed fans to really see her up close and in person. She is a true athlete and like myself found a niche in lifting weights and had the propensity to put good quality muscle on, and alot of it!! LOL! :p

Every time I've talked to Renee she's been super sweet and down to earth. I haven't heard bad things about her but from the exposure I have had to her, I have only positive experiences.

Gene, The bad things are probably derogatory remarks about her extreme muscualrity, and "manish" looks. If these people would look at her, especially "off season" she really has a pretty face and smile!!. But as you know and others there is always controversy
in every sport. this is why she does NABBA, fully accepts her physique

Yeah and I think Renee actually purposefully looks like she does for a reason. She does keep her hair very short and wears many non-feminine type clothes. I've heard ticket takers at shows ask if "he" was with someone who presented two tickets. doh!

Actually she has her hair in long braids, and tries at times to make a concerted effort to wear more ("girlie things, as she calls them) at shows. She's known for her crazy hats she also wears sometimes. LOL

I always say I respect her as an athlete. I do and do not neccessarily disrespect her in any way. This book I read that first made me know of her is called "Picturing The Modern Amazon." It said some pretty startling things about her in 2001 that I have never seen refuted anywhere. What the book seemed to communicate in not uncertain terms was a bit startling to me and I wouldn't want to get into unless I was convinced other members of our great forum wanted to.. I would say this though. You get things written about you in a book that takes some kind of high intellectual ground and writes about the history and sociological implications of women's bodybuilding without refuting them and leaving this impression intact...the image becomes the truth like it or not, true or not, but then again authors could write sensational things and make distortions of truth to prove THEIR point or make a contrast using someone who they could portray as an anomaly. An anomaly is what in the sport of women's bodybuilding Renee Toney might be, which to me would still be no reason to disrespect her as some do. I do not know if she'd really fit in with the IFBB, but there are federations where she competes and is more accepted. I cannot say that is a bad thing. I definitely respect her as an athlete from what I know but that is admittedly not much more than what I have read and seen in pictures.
