A Close Look At Elaine
By Terry Goodlad
If you are a fan of the old Andy of Mayberry TV series, you are either older than you want most folks to know; or you also have a passion for a simpler time when a persons honor and honesty meant more than how much money one could blow on a car stereo and seemingly not care. We call them the good old days. It was a time when things made sense, movies were about romance and adventure, and when the bad guy got shot, neither the bullet wound nor gore could be seen on his tuxedo as he dramatically passed from this earth. Times have changed as they will and should, and although it is hard to imagine life without a computer or cell phone, there are some things from the past that are best left the way they were.
Elaine comes from a small town in the heartland of Canada’s grain and Bible belt where time, it seems has stood still. Wadena Saskatchewan is a small community of 1500 hard working souls that worry more about grain prices than locking their doors when they leave the house. She was raised in what some call a normal home, with two parents, an older sister and a younger brother. There was school during the week followed by piano lessons. Sundays were spent at church where her Dad, a Baptist preacher, would sometimes deliver the sermon. Summers were spent helping to clean out her Dad’s moving van or working on the farm with her brother Donald, her sister Michele and her dad. After earning her allowance there was always lots of time left over for bike riding and hanging out at the town pool on hot summer days. The frigid Saskatchewan winters are a way of life in Canada and people adapt by simply layering on more insulation to be outside. Kids there love the snow and all the fun and treachery that snowmen and snowballs provide. Elaine was raised with plenty of hard physical work and an equal amount of good hearty food. Her mom’s home cooking was very healthy even by today’s strict athletic diet standards. Plenty of lean meat, potatoes, and vegetables at suppertime and fast food meant leftovers warmed up in a frying pan. Mealtime and food always represented comfort and good times. Although those days are a distant yet fond memory, most of the simple principals she was raised with remain as strong as they were back then.
Elaine left home at 15 to attend a private Christian boarding school where the rules, although extremely restrictive, were far less so than the rules back home. She loved the independence that comes with adolescence and for the first time in her life, boys became a consideration. She met a guy there that she dated for a while and continued to do so once school was done and she moved to the big city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. While she was living there, her boyfriend left her in what most would agree was a lapse in common sense. She fell into a deep depression and food was the only thing that offered her any comfort. A couple months later and 20 lbs heavier she realized she was overweight, depressed and miserable so she started to force herself to throw up after eating binges. She had a cousin Betty that was very close to her at the time and Betty recognized the signs and offered to take Elaine to a gym so she could start to turn herself around. Along with the changes that started to take place in her body, her self-esteem began to return. She continued to go the gym and a couple years later began training with a friend that was a powerlifter. Elaine had seen girls like Cory Everson in the magazines and told her friend she wanted to look like that and maybe even someday be in a magazine herself. Her friend believed in her and between the two of them they set a course to reach her dream.
Elaine looks back now on the 15 years that have passed since that day and although it seems like another lifetime ago, the time has passed very quickly. About 5 years ago she met Steve Wennserstrom from Flex Magazine and Woman’s Physique and he took some pictures of her and published them in both magazines. She had been discovered and since that time has been published over 20 times in magazines both inside and outside of the fitness industry. She has an endorsement contract with PVL Nutrients (a Canadian Supplement Company), and has modeled for numerous clothing companies, equipment companies, and advertising campaigns. She began competing and has earned her IFBB pro card and will compete in the new figure division in 2003. It has all been a dream come true and she earns her living doing what she loves to do most, living a fit and healthy lifestyle and sharing that with others.
Despite all the attention, the publicity, and the success, Elaine is still very much that simple Baptist farm girl from the Canadian Prairies. She is honest, works very hard for all she has earned, and she is a very good friend to those that earn that friendship. She loves the opportunity to share her experiences with others and hopefully help others like her cousin Betty helped her and plans to do so as long as God affords her the opportunity. She knows her time in the limelight will pass and having a balanced life with a husband, family, and good friends is most important as that will remain long after the magazine layouts are forgotten. Elaine is a woman that may be best known for her exterior beauty; yet when the time comes that competing and her cover model days are gone, she will remain forever beautiful.
