Many of us had problems getting kicked outta places during the Team U and there's been ongoing discussion about new permitting laws that would be more restrictive in NYC. There's an online petition you can sign here: http://www.pictureny.org/petition/index.php
If you are interested in fighting even more restrictive rules, please sign the petition there.

November 14th..?? No wonder it feels like forever since I've been here.
NY and Long Island certainly isn't a kind place for filming. Every inch of property is owned by someone. All seemingly with standing orders of "No photography" I had no idea it hit this level in the city though!
Thanks for the link Gene!

Wow......over 8500 signatures in 5 days!!! Not a very popular decision by the city at all!! How was shooting for you at Jr. Nats as opposed to Team U, Gene?? Are they friendlier in Chicago, or is this experience you had at Team U true for physique photographers pretty much everywhere??

I'm very glad to see the support in opposing these restrictive laws in NY. This is the wave of the future in terms of the Feds keeping citizens from using their camera's and camcorders in public area's. This is the way the "New World Order" keeps people from exposing their Police State tactics without repurcussion. Very soon we'll (USA) resemble the Role Model of the New World order...China. It's done legislatively. Before you know it, your country is changed forever. That is the agenda of this Neo Con administration now in power.
Keep up the fight.

Let me get this straight - you get harassed for photographing hot women on the street, yet it's perfectly acceptable now to carry cigarette lighters onto an airplane?

Today is the deadline on this - saw this funny video about the proposed legislation:

Damn, I'd love a law to be signed in like this in L.A.!! I read the regulations and it allows 2 people to shoot for up to 30 minutes in one location without a permit. If an officer or anyone else were to try and remove me from location, at least I'd know where I stand. Whereas now, I get kicked out immediately by anyone and everyone and I have no recourse.

As a lifelong NYer, I'm embarrassed by the city's current law, but the proposed rewritten law apparently is aimed at tourists and other casual photogrphers, with a fee and insurance still necessary for commercial photographers. NY State, under Gov. Nelson Rockefeller in the early 70's,was, I believe, the first in the U.S. to institute a tax on food, called by the press then the" hot dog tax." NYC and NY State have rarely missed an opportunity since then to slap taxes on everything and anything. We NYers are the most heavily taxed citizens in the nation, and IMO the law viz. public photography is just another means for the local politicians to raise revenue.

Yeah, but according to the MOFTB's official news release (http://nyc.gov/html/film/html/news/090107_moftb_rules_redraft.shtml) they are "re-drafting" the legislation and opening up a new 30-day comment period on the re-draft, so it looks like they are still planning on making this policy a new law to some degree. Let's hope that this time around they use a little more common sense. It's not over yet, folks!!!

I guess I don't really understand what the big deal is, other than the basic "yet another fee to pay driving production costs up."
30 minutes for a "casual" shoot in one city location is perfectly acceptable.
If you're going to be on the location longer than that, it's not unreasonable to assume that you're going to have a crew and gear that may allegedly be disruptive to traffic (foot, vehicular, whatever). The reasonable assumption then is that you're in business for profit, which means you should pay for the permit.
The fact that you're in business means that you should have insurance. Because, if you're in business, and you *don't* have insurance, you're an idiot.

Great news on this - they revised the rules on public photography. No permit is required for still photographers with handheld camera and tripod unless you want exclusive use of City property (thanks to Photo Attorney on this) - more on PDN:
