OK so I know that I am not good on the other side of the lens but since I've been talking about doing something along these lines before I thought I'd start a thread of shots of the industry peeps who are at the shows, etc.

Here's a shot of Simon who works for Tre this past weekend in Canada. He's shooting Heather MacKinnon there:

Hi to all. I know many of you do not know of us. We just got up and going this summer. I have been at 2 shows sofar. The Greater Knox Classic i took stage shots at perjudging and the main event. Clay Spires is a good friend of ours. The other show is Tennessee State NPC. Championships i took stage shots of perjudging and night show. I also worked with a figure competitor. Bryan Hayworth is also a good friend of ours. He is also the permotor of the show. Our goal is to one day be as well known as Genex, Dany Ray, Bill Dobbins.

Hey Gene! Long time no see!

I'm still around (for now) working for Muscular Development here and there and still shooting the local NPC shows in California. I'm still working with my business partner Bill Comstock who is at every show it seems these days. That man never takes a day off! My career has taken a backseat since the birth of my daughter but hopefully I'll have more time shortly to get back into the groove of things more than I am currently.

Keep up the good work Gene! (and everyone else too)

dano
November 20th, 2007, 08:10 PM
there's a huge gap between being buffed out and being totally untrained ... and in the middle lies "being in shape", for lack of a better phrase ... training, nutrition, and other facets of the scene are such a big part of these women's lives, and to me it seems as if there is next to nothing in common

i venture a guess that most sports photographers would prefer to be the athletes they capture but couldn't become for one reason or another ... are you telling me you want to be a fmale bodybuilder? ;)

The correlation you are trying to make is entirely non-sensical.

Now if our goal was to hop in bed with said "in shape" models, then you are correct, we had better be working out. Conversely, if it were the case that said "in shape" models were regularly hopping in bed with us photographers, you'd be rightfully confused. I can assure you that you needn't lose any sleep being confounded about that scenario though.

oh really? nice totally irrelevant reference. (besides, those guys are already married to a model, banging one, or gay.*)

The correlation you are trying to make is entirely non-sensical.
the bit about gene wanting to be a female bodybuilder was a joke. a joke is not meant to be taken seriously but may be intended to pull out some more insight rather than some defense.

Now if our goal was to hop in bed with said "in shape" models, then you are correct, we had better be working out. Conversely, if it were the case that said "in shape" models were regularly hopping in bed with us photographers, you'd be rightfully confused. i didn't imply anything about models being "in shape", nor did i imply anything about "hopping in bed" with anyone. i implied that maybe people in the fitness and physique industry - be they photographers, organizers, judges, whatever - might actually be interested in at least covering the very basics themselves. i'm talking about a very low level, fundamental common ground ... who do people like to hang out with and befriend? those that share the same interests, or others?

and surely everyone has a goal to "hop in bed" with someone - male, female, both, whatever. some basic level of exercise, nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle go a long way towards a good life in general and any meaningful relationship as well.

nobody has to give two sh*ts about my question, but i remain curious.

btw, nice work john.

nobody has to give two sh*ts about my question, but i remain curious. You dismissed my comment as being totally irrelevant, though I beg to differ. Your premise that anyone hanging around the fitness industry in any respect ought to share the same enthusiasm for working out as the competitors is completely baseless. In the case of photographers, the commonality usually ends at a merely visual (but hopefully tactile) interest. Few share any goals related to lifting anything heavier than a 300/2.8 mm lens. Nor do fashion photographers have any interest in in donning the latest trendy clothes, nor do beauty photographers have any interest in wearing makeup, nor do playboy photographers have any interest in getting implants or getting naked in front of the camera. Photographers may photograph what they admire, but (with the exception of JC) there is no implicit desire to emmulate their models that I'm aware of. Universally, it's fairly widely accepted that they all do want to sleep with their models though. If only the converse were true!

ok. i'm not suggesting that industry persons share the same enthuiasm, rather just some interest. i would expect that doing so would provide, and particularly for a photographer - an artist - an inside and more intimate perspective. i would want that connection, and simply i find it odd that few of the industry faces seem to.

as you know, the industry is by and large quite obscure. i'm just trying to understand things and will put up questions in an attempt to satisfy my curiosity.

i'm not really hoping for any specific answer ... i am looking for reasonable explanations (such as yours) or at least an effort (notice you are the only one that bothered)1. I like the look of athletic women.

i like the look of athletic women
i do like to exercise
i like to eat too

so at least i have an understanding of these women's dedication, the pain they put themselves through, the willpower they must possess, etc.

it is my opinion that not taking care of one's basic health and appearance is pure laziness, and in this case such behavior runs totally contrary to the focus of the industry

I agree with everything John said, as well as Tom Nine summarizing it perfectly. LOL.

BTW dano, one does not have to be a gymrat to "have an understanding of these women's dedication, pain, willpower.... etc". Shooting FBB's in the gym, or being married to them, offers plenty of insight to their lifestyle as well, perhaps even more than you are exposed to by understanding what it feels like to do a few drop sets.

I think photographers and videographers in any industry would rather spend their time perfecting their craft, and doing what they love, as opposed to wasting time in the gym and being non-productive, doing what "you expect".

The best thing in the world is to be married to them...

4. I couldn't care less about the "fitness industry."

Thanks for clarifying your opinion, dano, some folks might not have guessed it from the way you phrased your "question."

you guys are lazy ... is that better?

Yeah, much better after your edit. You shouldn't even joke with that word.

Some of us work out AND take pictures. Just like beauty, health is in the eye of the beholder.

people are hypersensitive to that word. it "is sometimes used as a nonspecific derogatory epithet in referring to either sex. In British and Australian English it usually refers to a male (the Macquarie Dictionary defines it as "a despicable man").."

health is in the eye of the beholder? wtf?

You know what Dano? I'm not going to address those issues here. Wrong place, wrong time. Tell you what, start a thread about approriate terms with that one in particular and we'll see how long you last.

ok. i'm not suggesting that industry persons share the same enthuiasm, rather just some interest. i would expect that doing so would provide, and particularly for a photographer - an artist - an inside and more intimate perspective. i would want that connection, and simply i find it odd that few of the industry faces seem to.

as you know, the industry is by and large quite obscure. i'm just trying to understand things and will put up questions in an attempt to satisfy my curiosity.
I once made the mistake of asking a woman why she wanted to be with me. In my mind, I just assumed she wanted a more physically fit guy...a superhero. She informed me that the body is just a shell and that she wanted me for far more than that.

That's my story.

True, but you're just using me to get to Brittums.

LOL @ that guy's use of the term 'lazy'.

He must not be aware of the amount of work required to deal with fcuksticks.

I've competed twice and while it provided a newfound respect for what competitors go through to compete and make it on stage, it had no effect on my photography.

I've competed twice and while it provided a newfound respect for what competitors go through to compete and make it on stage, it had no effect on my photography. Count your lucky stars -- no effect could be a good thing! I've actually heard rumors of photographers who try working out and who experience very negative side effects on their photography and their business, such as pushing steroids to their models, stalking them, and/or encourage them to sign deceitful or blatantly unfair agreements.

Isaac - YOU are the true pioneer of the men's figure movement. :D

To be honest, though, you're a much better photographer today than you were 2 years ago. The same cannot be said for all of us.

It's ok, I gotcha.
