Just a quick cautionary tale to anyone thinking about ever having a website. Reserve the domain name NOW!!!

Even if you aren't planning on building or having a site built for a while, get the name NOW!

A woman who is a new client was considering a web site.

When she began seriously considering that she wanted her own site she mentioned it on a few forums and message boards, including a yahoo group. Subsequently, several people with proposals/offers approached her. One of those people was me.

After several conversations and a few weeks of thought she decided that she did want to move ahead with a site and I was fortunate to have her choose me as her designer.

Well, when we went to register her domain name, guess what? Someone had registered it the DAY before!

Now, it is possible that this could just be a coincidence. But given the woman's name who I am working with, the timing... and the fact that the guy had a bogus contact e-mail AND a bogus phone number for his registration, ya gotta belief there was intent.

So if you are thinking about a site or thinking you might ever be thinking about a site. Reserve the domain name NOW!!!

It is easy and not terribly expensive. I use www.directnic.com. To register a .com addresses through them is $15 a year. They are very easy to work with and I have been using them for more than 5 years. There are others of course, godaddy.com, register.com, dotster.com and on and on.... though personally I would never use networksolutions.com... my opinion is that they suck! But I digress.

No matter who you use, register it now. If you don't or can't do it for yourself, get someone you trust to help... JUST DO IT!

My .02 for today.

JUST ADDED - Got a couple of questions so I put together an article with tips and suggestions.

Your Web Site (http://www.truebodies.com/article/articles_website.htm)

Give it a read.

Hope it helps.

I use TOSDomains at http://www.tosdomains.net for domain URLs we own. It's just under $9 per year and hosting is just $4.95 per month.

This has been around for a while well in the sports/cleb world. People buying up domain names, so when someone famous ends up wanting it they can over charge for it. Most just end up having to use another name. Kinda tacky, but that is how it works. Why someone would do in in the bbing world I don't get it's not like there is money to be made this way.

"Cybersquatting" , as it's called, is not legal. While it generally applies to trademarks, it can also -- and has been used --- for celebrities to reclaim their names.

Given that some Women bodybuilders' names are looked up thousands of times a day on search engines like Google, owning a URL that consists of that person's name can be of considerable value if the webmaster knows what he or she is doing. If you are reading this, and don't own your name, take steps to reclaim it.

Show me where it's illegal. Seriously...

Unethical...Oh hell yah...Not a nice thing to do...Oh hell yah...Down low dirty and mean...Oh hell yah...

Illegal - show me (not that I have, do or will, I just want to see it on the books - and I'm not talking about case precedence, I'm talking about the law). It's no different than any other speculation investment, when you get right down to it.

I think if you have a domain and no site then that is illegal. SOme will make a small crap site to get around it.

You could try something around intellectual property but it would probably be a stretch... but either way, it's just being an ass.
