View Full Version : morning pre-workout meal?

Don't know if this forum is the place to ask this. But I've gotten some confusing input on this at some other forums, so here goes.
I've heard that consuming protein before a workout is worthless. But doesn't the body need some energy to workout with? And if I've worked out the day before, don't the muscles need protein when I first wake up in the morning?
So it seems like a relatively high protein "meal" (to rebuild the muscles worked yesterday) with some carbs as well (to energize for the pending morning workout?) would be appropriate.
What are the bodybuilders here doing? Is there an ideal ratio of protein/carbs to consume before a morning workout? How long before the workout is best?
Any input is appreciated.

For me not that I have a clue I like to go on an empty stomach.(first cardio of the morning) I try to burn off as much fat as I can before I eat, but that is just what I do.

I learned that Protein is not a good energy source, and only used for energy when your glycogen stores are depleted, like when carb depleted for a show. Ketone bodies are produced when this happens. Which is not good for your body to use for energy. Carbohydrates and fat are real good energy sources. Carbs carrying 4 cal/g and fat 9 cal/g. If you have a little protein with your carb meal it helps your body metabolize the carbs better (Has to deal with insulin levels). "Good fats" are a real good energy sources that alot of people forget about when deciding about foods to eat before workouts. These include Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids such as the fat found in walnuts, salmon, olive oil, etc. So a good combination of a meal with a little protein, carbs, and a little fat about 2 hours before lifting should give you plenty of energy to complete your workout.
