I had a bad cold with some severe coughing fits. Now I have a quarter sized hernia! It goes back in when I press it and it doesn't hurt. problem is I am preparing for 3 figure competitions and don't know if the training will make it worse. Anyone else have some hernia experence???? :1eek:

Do you have an abdominal or inguinal (groin area) hernia? Do you have more than one hernia? Is it painful? Does it hurt to cough, sneeze, or lift objects of moderate (or greater) weight? What is the date of your next planned contest? How much more bodyfat, if any, are you planning to lose? (If it is a visible abdominal hernia, it may become more visible with further loss of subcutaneous fat)

its an inguinal hernia. My first show is may 6th and my bf% is currently 9%. It doesn't hurt. It pops out when I cough or if I'm on my feet a long time. I am so not happy about this! gawd!

Hi There,
I've had two hernias and both operated on, I also compete in figure now and mine is umbilical so of course when I get lean from the mesh that's in there it sticks out a bit. I feel your pain bc it's not too attractive for figure. During my bbding days it's was quite obvious hence the reason I had to have it fix, with your's being lower your suit may be able to hit it depending on who makes it. I can't hide mine so I'm screwd pretty much:(.
Hope that makes u feel lil better, hernias are no fun. I had two surgeries in the same area the second one was alot bigger so I have a 6" mesh in.
Have a great weekend.

O.K., based upon the general information you have provided, it sounds lile you have developed an inguinal hernia that will require surgical repair sooner or later.

The best course of action for you is to immediately schedule a consultation and physical examination with a board-certified general surgeon. Do this NOW. During this consultation the surgeon will evaluate your hernia and will determine the weakness(es) in the abdominal wall that have resulted in your hernia. The surgeon will advise you of the particular surgical procedure that will provide you with the best repair. The surgeon will also be in the best position to determine whether you should have the surgery now, or whether you can wait a little while before undergoing surgery.

I would defer to the opinion of the surgeon who actually examines you, but in general, if you can train AND perform your activities of daily living without significant pain, AND if your hernia is not increasing in size, you can probably go on with your plans to enter the May 5 figure contest. In most instances, an inguinal hernia is not going to be visible to the judges and, therefore, will not significantly factor into your appearance at a figure competition.

Moreover, if you are already at a "true" nine percent bodyfat you are on target for having the proper condition for this event. So, if I were in your shoes, I would go ahead and do the contest if your surgeon confirms that it is medically safe to do so. However, I would not wait too long after the contest to have the surgical repair.

The recovery time with an inguinal hernia can vary depending upon the surgical procedure and the extent that the abdominal wall needs to be reinforced (see Shelly11's comments in the previous post regarding "mesh"). But, in general, you are going to need to allow approximately six weeks for surgical healing. If you have the surgery no later than May you may still have a good chance of resuming qualifying figure competitions in September-October. Good luck.

thanks for the info. Sorry about yours too! I think my suit can hide it (phew!) will training make it bigger or should I wear some girdle type thing when I train heavy to prevent it from getting bigger?
take care

You already have tissue protruding through an abnormal opening or seam in your abdominal wall!! Training may certainly make your hernia bigger. That is a possibility that must be considered. The actual benefit of wearing a girdle or truss is questionable, at best. Any protective benefit from a girdle would be quickly off-set by rigorous squatting, lifting, or abdominal crunches. So, where does that leave you?

I repeat, the best course of action for you is to "face the beast" and get an evaluation of your hernia, now, from an experienced general surgeon. Then make your decision to proceed with or defer surgery based upon the best medical information. Waiting for your hernia to get really bad is only inviting a more complicated repair and a longer recovery process for yourself.

I would strongly suggest as Echo said have a doctor take a look at it, I had no idea the extend of my tear until they opened my up. The longer you wait there's a chance of pain increasing and growth. If the tear is small then you're lucky but it's a large tear then your surgery maybe a little more extensive. I was scheduled to be in surgery for 45 mins until they opened me and saw how large the tear yes instead it took 1 hour and 15 mins.
Recovery time was quick for me I was back to work in 10 days lil honced over but I survived it lol, and training in 8 weeks but didn't train abs at all for a year because I was scared to as that's how I tore it the seond time around didn't give the first one enough time to heal which is why I think they looked as weak as they did last year but hopefully with a whole off-season this year of training them they'll look much better come July.
All the best in your training but do get it looked at.
Have a geat Sunday.
