Three Ithaca College Students Will Premiere Documentary About the World's Strongest Woman
Ithaca, NY--A documentary profiling Becca Swanson, the world's strongest female powerlifter, will premiere at Ithaca College on Wednesday, April 19. Produced by three senior television-radio majors in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, "Strongest Ever" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium. The screening is free and open to the public.
"Production for 'Strongest Ever' began in 2004 in a course, Documentary Research," says Jacqueline Willemsen, one of the student producers. "After completing a 14-minute pilot on the sport of Strongman, I joined classmates Chris Lavigne and Colleen Evanson in some independent research into strength sports."
The students' research led them to Becca Swanson, holder of numerous powerlifting records. Swanson's achievements includ being the only woman to squat lift more than 800 pounds, deadlift more than 650 pounds, and to total more than 2,000 pounds in the combined squat, bench press, and deadlift categories.
Taken by the passion, pain, and endless dedication needed to become the world's strongest woman, Willemsen, Lavigne, and Evanson formed Big Deal Productions with Emmy-winning producer and associate professor of television-radio Ben Crane. In documenting Swanson's achievements, the production crew followed Swanson to competitions in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania as well as to Helsinki, Finland. The result of their work is a one-hour film depicting the forces that drive a woman to squat lift more than three times her own weight.
