It will definitely be a long day! This is when I'm glad I'm in the A class and can get out of the auditorium before everyone else to do shoots and rest up for the finals.
I'll be at this show and then two weeks later flying into Vegas for USA's.

Jess, is this you?
I am ready! I did not place well at Juniors in Figure despite coming in my best ever, so I am using that as fuel for my prep over the next 4 weeks. Look out for me at Team U, I'll be bringin' it in the Fitness Tall class with an all-new routine - high-energy and full of excitement.

I will be in NY for Fitness. I really hope there are more Fitness girls then there were at Jr. Nationals!! There seems to be less and less competitors as time goes on. The one good thing is that the girls who are competing are very competitive as I found this past weekend!! I really have to step it up for NY. See you there!!

I am competing and I cannot wait!!! I had to wait until after Junior Nationals to get the OK from my coach (I tend to get so lean, he has to see how I hold up through the dryout)...but he said to go ahead!!! I am excited. For me, it's all about gaining experience and exposure this year so I don't feel tons of pressure like some of the girls. Honestly, the highlight of my weekend at Juniors was making top 15 in that mega class B! I did not do well in the 2 piece round because I am so small but I stuck to my diet plan and stayed tight, remained positive and came back on Saturday and made top 10 in the one piece. It really ain't over til it's over!
I am very excited just to step on stage again in NYC. Congrats to all who did Juniors and good luck to those doing Team U. Everyone is always so friendly at these shows...I look forward to competing with you all!!

Depending on how things work out at work for me, I'm thinking about heading out to Team U on a whim to hang with the crowd and watch the show. Oh, and to party with Tara of course. Thing is, tickets for the flight are so expensive for a weekend, I don't suppose I can talk anyone into sponsoring me? :-)

I think Jen Abrams(BB) and Mandy Polk(Fitness) are also competing in NY.Hey Jason, I've recently found out that Theresa Hendricks (Faith Princess) will be competing at the Team Universe right after her winning the Women's Light-Heavyweight Class at the Jr. Nationals.
The good thing about this contest is that it's drug-tested so there will be a level playing field so the judges as well as the folks in the audience could see who's really bringing the goods.
Plus since 2002, this contest gives Women Bodybuilders a chance to recieve their pro cards (primarly the Women's overall Champion) quicker if that person doesn't win it at the IFBB Worlds.
Since we now which Fitness & Figure Women are competing, it would be nice to know of any more Women Bodybuilders who's going to make the Trek to the Big Apple to compete to win the show & to qualify for the IFBB Worlds as well.

I have a question for those who have done this show before...what time does figure usually get onstage? I see the athletes meeting is at about 9 I think but my coach has us on an eating schedule that makes me think we won't be on til after noon....he usually talks to the promoters to be sure but I was just curious....

Michelle Morrisson was not disqualified. Unfortunantely during the moring call outs, she became light-headed, began to cramp up and fainted on stage. That is why she was not on stage...though they called out her name anyway...for if she was, she would've won the division. She was actually in the arena watching the show for a while. But for those of you who do care, she's doing fine now and is well rested. Thank you all for your concern.

Not too well. She was in one of the last if not last call outs in each prejudging round. She looked good but too muscular for figure. Yeah same thing happened to her at Jr Nationals too. She just switched to Figure so it's going to take her some time to get her quads down to those of a Figure competitor. I much prefer her as a BBer. I thought she looked awesome at Jr Nationals last year. Here's a pic:

I know. See, I can laugh or cry about this roller coaster ride of placings that the judges put me through, and the crying only smeared my make up and gave me a headache on Saturday, and I was still stuck in 12th place. At least the jokes exercise my abs and cheek muscles.
Anyway, I posted a couple of backstage pics on Muscle Mayhem to show off Elizabeth Dwelle's handmade creations, but I'm sure Gene's pics will be better. She did my jewelry (along with Amy Peter's) for this show, and I absolutely loved the pieces!! The girl had a baby just a few weeks ago and still got my jewelry to me on time! Way to go, Momma!! You can reach her at elizabethroper@hotmail.com if you want more info. She does personal pieces as well...not just contest stuff.

Thanks for posting the pics Gene! These are the first I have been able to find!!!!
That shot you posted of me is my newly rehearsed "model turns" hee hee. That seems to be the new requirement at all the national shows now so I finally got my "relaxed pose" on both sides down pat!
I think they really like to keep us on our toes....how about that posing change for the 2 piece round?? Throwing in the front pose last minute! I almost forgot to do it! I heard someone say backstage that the only reason they have us do model turns now is for the photographers. The shots are prettier than just the quarter turns. I heard the judges don't even really judge you too much when you pose individually and I am tempted to believe it. I get the most scrutiny when I am in line or in group quarter turns.
So I am curious....what did everyone think of the judging? I heard a few people say that the big changes that were rumored to be afoot went into affect at this show. I did notice the changes in rankings----lots of girls who did well at Juniors didn't do well here and vice versa. Personally, I did top 5 at Junior USA's, top 15 at Junior Nat's, then now top 5 again at Nationals so I am not sure what is happening. I felt good about each show so I don't know...
Any thoughts anyone??

Jen you looked amazing and I wish I had the answer!
Thanks Nikki for mentioning me. After the show a bunch of us stayed to listen to what Sandy had to say. She was not pleased at how muscular everyone is...seriously. She said like 80% of the ladies on stage are TOO BIG.
I was told I look like a bber and had too much separation in my quads. I actually though a Figure show was about a good degree of muscularity and definition but not over-developed and striated. I was wrong. Last year they told me I was thin and to put on size...now I am too big. I'm not sure where the middle is or if I want to be there.
I'm truly hoping they split figure into two classes- a model look and a muscular look because I think the majority of us ladies like being a little bigger and leaner. This was definitely a show I just shook my head at and didn't understand.
Vegas should be fun regardless, I am looking forward to seeing all you ladies there. If nothing else I had a wonderful time meeting you Tamee :) It was also great to talk with Jennifer, Jessica, Jodi and Tracey, seriously ladies you all looked amazing. Plus I got to see my good friend Susan win her Pro-Card...congratulations.

I have to agree with you Jennifer (by the way, I was #168, the girl right in front of you in line!!)
I am surprised I went from 14th at Juniors to 5th at Nationals with basically the same physique. I was told I was too skinny at Junior Nationals and I was a little thin this time too in my opinion but oh well, somehow they liked me better this time?!?!
I just think it is strange for them to change requirements midseason. And I would like to see them continue to reward the bigger, more muscular physique. Ironically, that will NOT benefit me, since I am still smaller, but you know, I love training and I am happy with the idea that I have something to work for. I WANT to add size and admire the girls who have that beautiful shape. (BTW, Jennifer, I thought your lines were beautiful ;)) I don't want figure to be a bikini contest either. I really wonder what the judges are looking for now....

One more thing, I am VERY anxious to see how you all do in Vegas. I wil not be going but I hear that bigger, harder physiques will be rewarded there?? Something about West Coast judging and the preference there...we shall see! It will be interesting.......
At the very least I hope you guys get the placings you deserve. I was absolutely over the moon for my friends Amber, Elisha, Corry and Shelby when they got their pro cards this weekend. They have worked their asses off and it was a sweet victory for each of them. Jessica, Jennifer, and all of you girls have top notch physiques and I have seen you look great show after show. I am really rooting for you and I hope everything falls into place for you in Vegas!!!

Jennifer, I don't know how I stay sane. One of the pro figure girls whose opinion I value greatly said to me, "Your conditioning was spot on. I don't know what to tell you, Jodi." I had to walk away because I began crying. To hear from everyone and their dog that I deserve better, that they can't figure out why I don't get better placings...it kills me sometimes. But I try my best to not get my hopes up anymore. Everyone who sees me prior to a show says, "You'll turn pro this year; I can feel it." I laugh it off and say, "You just don't know how things are, do you?"
I wrote on my website that my body is my trophy. My placing does not define me. While this doesn't exactly ease the disappointment of falling out of the top ten after having been in the top five for the third year in a row, it does make me look at my prep for this show and not regret a single thing. I am happy with my body. Do I have flaws? Yes. Who doesn't? But here's the thing: I like my legs. I like my glutes. I like my arms. I like my shoulders. I like my back. I feel I have a very complete and very feminine package, and the comments I hear on a daily basis when I'm out and about in the real world affirm this. To top it off, I haven't done a single thing in my prep that I don't agree with or that would harm my body/my health.
Girls are choosing to shape their bodies for seven strangers. I choose to shape my body for myself. I suggest all girls in this industry choose the latter rather than the former, and then hope that the two opinions collide. The criteria changes from show to show (a judge admitted that to one of my friends just this very weekend) and from year to year. It's a crap shoot, in my opinion. You can either please yourself all the time and possibly get lucky and hit the figure jackpot once, or you can never please yourself and always try to please the judges and end up poor in the long run.
You can walk away from figure, but you can't walk away from yourself.

I'm not dishing the NPC or judges I just think it's sad if they are moving in that direction of hardly any muscle and not very lean. After all this is the NPC and not Hawaiian Tropics! Then you wonder why the people already say Figure is a glorified beauty pageant considering what some of these girls who win look like.....barbie doll legs.....that anorexic stringy look. No thanks! Anyone can acheive that look......do 4hrs of cardio a day and don't eat......LOL. Heck, natural organizations are actually rewarding the leaner/muscular females for figure! Then, look at the Canadian Nationals these women are big and lean......not saying that is where USA should go in this direction but it is night and day b/w the two. Why can't there be a middle.
Ladies, you have to remember that figure is like judging apples to oranges. YOu might fare awesome at one show and fare awful at another with the same physique........different judging panel with different ladies you are competing with. There is one particular lady that just turned Pro recently this summer who I always beat year after year at amateur shows/etc. However, at the Nationals she always did better than myself even when presenting the same physiques from show to show. She was much softer and not as muscular but that is what they were looking for at Nationals. It is frustrating but you have to keep doing this for yourself and present a pkg that you are happy with. Then again, you will always have your fans that no matter where you place you will always have them there backing you up.....like your cheerleaders!
Jennifer Gates, I know your frustration! I have admired your physique since I seen pics ofyou awhile back! I also know that whenever people post your pics everyone is in awe! YOur physique is beautiful but you truly do have a structure that of a lightweight bodybuilder. I would not downsize for no means......this is hard-earned muscle you would be parting with.....Heck, I would love to see you step onstage in bbing esp with the new standards that they are following. I wish more ladies would make the switch and the NPC truly followed their standards they have recently set.
The main reason I do Figure over bodybuilding because I am natural and I don't think I could ever fare well at the National level without enhancement. However, i'm def going to see if the npc follows these new standards and I would possibly switch back and give it a try...Actually being able to showcase the physique more than quarter turns would be GREAT!

Jodi, you obviously love to compete or else why would you keep at it like you have. Have you ever thought about competing in another arena? Or why compete at the National level at all and waste all that money. Why not just compete in the local show in your area. You save on so much money, time off, etc. If your true love is to compete who cares where it is. If you are competing for yourself then just do it for you and to hell with the damn placings. You know and I know and everyone else who has ever run across you knows you are a true athlete a winner. **** the damn judges and their opionions. **** that $15.00 trophy and **** that damn "pro" card that will cost you an $300.00 AFTER you win. :) Now go eat a piece of cheesecake!!!!

You are too funny! Are you sure you don't want me eating a piece of cheesecake so you can live vicariously through me? Lol! I'm not carb deprived at all, girly. I had carrot cake twice a week every single week going into this show! Cheat meals do a body good!
I'm going to see what happens in Vegas, and then I feel I'm at a point where some decisions need to be made. I know I have many options at my fingertips and that I might have held myself back by hanging on for so long. It's just a matter of finally taking a leap of faith and trying something different. I think that after I placed fourth at USA's last year, a little bit of hope rang loud in my heart, and I thought, "maybe...just maybe." I should have known better, huh? Lol!

Hi ladies! I'm an NPC Judge/Chief Judge for the State of Colorado and I sit back and watch the placings in the National level and sometimes scratch my head at how they place some of the girls. All I can say is DO NOT conform to the judges on how you want to come in. It will not work! Each judge sees something different. The old saying "The Eye of Beholder".....so true! My advice is come in how YOU like to come in and hopefully that night is your night. It all depends too on who is standing next to you and who is competing that particular night. I also DO NOT believe that you have to compete in so many shows to get "noticed". If you got it, you got it...believe me, you will get noticed!!!
I'm sorry to so many of you girls who didn't get the placings you wanted. I see your pictures and think....WOW, Really?
Good luck to all of you who are going to the USA's. I was going to go, but decided that I'll do it next year. Just did my first figure show and I'm enjoying my eating right now. :)

Yeah same thing happened to her at Jr Nationals too. She just switched to Figure so it's going to take her some time to get her quads down to those of a Figure competitor. I much prefer her as a BBer. I thought she looked awesome at Jr Nationals last year. Here's a pic:

I feel I have to say something here...I do not take your post personally or anything and in fact, I just said I agree with you that figure should not be a bikini contest :) But some of us that are smaller on stage (and thinner) do not get that way by not training and not eating. I am one of those girls with a wicked metabolism---but I lift MY ASS OFF in the gym. I eat like crazy and I only do cardio to shape my body, not burn extra fat. In fact, last year, I had to stop competing because I was so striated and lean :(
I work as hard as the next girl but I do not have the genetics to add muscle as fast. I have work hard ALL YEAR to keep any sort of physique. Most girls can rest in the off season but I have to eat a ton to gain some weight and add some muscle. I never get a break from lifting or I lose my gains. I may not look like it yet, but I work hard for what I have and I look forward to adding more in the future---for me, the success of getting bigger will be sweeter because I have to work so hard for it. So I may look Barbie-ish but it isn't for lack of effort. And I am told repeatedly by the judges that my SHAPE is what earns my placings. The broad shoulders, tight waist and round, curvy pelvic shape. I am lucky genetically that way and I am trying to complete my physique built around that!
So I know you meant no harm by your comment but it sometimes hurts when people think I do nothing and just step on stage and prance around. I actually stress about being UNDERWEIGHT at times and my contest prep is as precise as anyone's...just maybe in the opposite way :)
There's my two cents :)

we all deserve props for the dedication, sacrifice and commitment we give to this sport and we cant forget that this is our choice and the biggest reward stares us in the mirror everyday. No trophy can remind us of that. Every year my placings are beyond random (5th to 16th in National shows!) but i'm just excited to make it to that stage no matter what the outcome is and to meet up with some of the girls whom i now i consider my friends. I tip my hat and clap my hands to all who sacrafice their time and freedom for themselves!! Woo hoo! :)

Gene do you have any pics of Melody in her one piece? I just spoke to Sandy and she said that almost every girl came in two hard. She said that the reason Melody placed 10th in the one piece is that she looked too muscular. In her two piece she placed 2nd with 9 points. She said Melody's semmetry brought the whole package together. This is so confusing. Sandy said that they are penalizing girls for coming into muscular and flexing. She said that the judges do not want to see any seperation unless they carry it well. THat sort of confused me as well. Does anyone have any feedback on the matter?

Here's a tall class callout that I thought had some great athletes in it and maybe should have happened earlier:
http://static.flickr.com/71/192751250_d71c46122e_o.jpg
I certainly agree that these girls should've been called out sooner. Of course Jessie Wright looked awesome...I really thought she'd get her pro card after her success at Juniors! But my friend Caity Hunt (girl furthest on the left) got overlooked too. Her placings have been up and down this year. She was told by the judges at Juniors that her legs were too big and she worked SO HARD to bring them down. We're talking no carbs and 3 cardios per day. And I thought she came in looking beautiful with just the adjustments they wanted---still very balanced but a smaller lower body. And still, she got slotted in the callouts with the other girls that deserved better...soooooo frustrating.......
I have to say though, I watched this class from the audience and I was struck by not only the size (30 + girls) but also the depth and abundance of great physiques. LOTS of great girls in this class........

I am very appauled by the turnout at this show, mostly in the Figure F class, which took the brutal hit! What basically happend was most of the girls that place high got tossed in the back, and the girls that didn't place as high at previous shows got moved up. THREE instances are Danielle Rouleau, Melissa Montanarro, and Jessica Wright, I thought one of these three would definitely have it at this show, and then I see the final results and I'm like :wtf: . Danielle always places in the top 5 at every show this year, and then for her to be thrown at the end is absolute BS! For a 21 yr old, she has one of the most beautiful and aesthetic bodies I have seen. Some say she 's too big, but actually when you look at her stats, lets say her legs for instance, there only 23.5 inches in circumference, which means smaller then most girls up there, they are just really full muscle bellies, and you shouldn't get penalized for that, you know how long it takes someone to get full round bellies like that? YEARS and sometimes, some can never achieve this! Her first National level show in Vegas in 05, she placed 15th, and now to get this, is absolute crud, someone needs to change these manadates in the beginning of the year, not in the middle or during a show, it's very improfessional. And makes these girls even more stressed out which is something they don't need 2 minutes before going on stage. This should prove how unfair and unjustified the judging is! These girls were in the top 5 with Mary Jo Cooke and now they are placed several places back??? No rhyme and reason behind this! I'm not taking any competitors side, but when I see something that is UNFAIR like this show Team Universe, something needs to be done and I know I'm not the only one stating this debacle, there are several posts about this, OBVIOUSLY IT'S AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND CORRECTED B4 THE NEXT SHOW! BTW GENEX, DO YOU HAVE ANY PICS OF DANIELLE ROULEAU, MELISSA MONTANARRO, AND JESSICA WRIGHT, SINCE I'M USED TO SEEING THEIR PICTURES POSTED, I DO NOT SEE ANY. THANKS!
P.S. GIRLS DON'T LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU THIS TEAM U 2006. IT WAS A JOKE THIS SHOW, AND LETS JUST ROLL WITH IT AND FORGET THIS EVER HAPPEND LOL AND GOOD LUCK IN VEGAS IF YOU ARE COMPETING THERE :sprite10:

Funny you should mention energy b/c I have had close to none since the show last weekend! One of my strategies for next year will be to cut down the number of shows I prepare for...I noticed that my ability to peak at the right time/place dwindled more and more with each passing show this year. By the time I got to Team U, my body had more than enough dieting and sodium/water manipulation, that's for sure!
I had to do it that way this year, since it was my first year competing at all, and I wanted to get myself "on the map," but next year will be more focused. Two shows MAX!
All in all, we had a great time and it was a great experience, highlighted by getting some pics with Gene and partying the night away after the show! I'm already looking forward to next year....

HAHA, yeah, you know what Figfan, that's what they are looking for this year, perfect aesthetics, and that pic's got it :420 man: I can think of another great one, what about 1st place figure E class, hmmm? You don't need abs this year, don't bother doing them. Badoinkadoink. It's as if a pro card is losing it's merit! If you girls need pics to view, go to hardfitness.com and go to competitions all the two piece and one piece pics are there, even comparison shots. When I viewed these pics today, I couldn't believe it, I really felt bad and was in disbelief about the placings. Enough mourning, we can sit here all day and talk about this :banghead:

hhmm..procard losing its merit...i can agree....almost as quickly as the figure rules were reinvented this weekend.
Great Pics Gene....everyone looks beyond amazing....and now i see the areas i have to tidy up on too!
Despite the ruling from this show and how adamant the judges were on us girls w/too much muscle...i'm not altering my shape and killing my muscle that took me years to develop. Yeah, i have some areas that need extra attention and shaping...but my idea of figure is an athletic, muscular, shapely, defined and complete look....a look that most of us had this weekend and unfortunately went punished.

I was definitely confused by the judging. It seems to be the same for us in fitness. I came in my best shape ever, and placed 9th in 1 piece and 4th in 2 piece. (Last year I swept both physique rounds with perfect scores and my legs were a little soft - even I admit my conditioning was off for that show.)
I'm not going to change anything; I don't think I CAN change anything! They told me I was too big, which is just craziness... I was always too small, now suddenly I am too big?! Too confusing and very frustrating.

Oh hell, Jodi - I didn't mean to make you cry! ;) I was just giving credit where credit is due. Your physique and conditioning have always impressed me from the first time I met you back in 2003. If pro status were based on discipline, work ethic, and knowledge - you would have been professional long ago. No, let me rephrase that - you already are a professional.
Good luck in Vegas/USA's. I'll be there working, so I'll see you then!
Chris
www.christinewan.com
I think it brought me to tears because I value your opinion so much. To have had the opportunity to compete with you in 2003 and place only a few spots behind two girls (you and Latisha) who have really represented the short class so remarkably well...I hold onto that feeling every year. I'm proud to have placed behind you. And to hear the compliment from someone who I know tells it to me straight; well, it just affirmed everything I felt about my body, and I got all emotional.
I will be doing what I can to downsize these quads a bit, but as that happens, I will also become more conditioned. It's a Catch 22 situation with those of us who carry thick muscle mass and density in our legs. The only way to get them down in size is to become harder and drier. I actually love being rock hard, vascular, and in tip top conditioning, so this isn't going against my grain of standards for myself. I just personally didn't think it was what figure had wanted from the girls.
I do want to say that the pictures out there are not a complete and accurate representation of the looks of these girls in real life. There were some girls who received horrible places or didn't get what they deserved but had such beautiful and amazing physiques that just are being evidenced in the pictures. I'm not sure what occurred with the lighting at this show, but this was one arena where illusion truly was everything because backstage/up close and personal told a whole different story.
By the way, Misty Green is just incredible. Her physique, her personality, her willingness to stop and talk to me and try to keep me hanging on as I moved from the one piece round to the two piece, she is truly a wonderful addition to the NPC community.
Thank you to all of the girls who complimented me backstage and were so nice. It's so easy to get beaten down in emotions when you ride the roller coaster of placements over five years straight. People like Jennifer Searles, Chris, Cindy Martinez, and so many others have said the nicest and most motivating things to me. They help me to remember why I've fought the good fight for so long.
I have no expectations for Vegas except to make myself proud with the physique I bring to the stage. Good luck to all girls who are preparing so diligently. Bring what the package that works best for you. The rest is simply a crapshoot (and isn't Vegas the perfect host city? Lol!).

You must visit www.pbloco.com
I would imagine that they ship to the UK as well. I discovered this site with about 4 weeks left in my contest diet, and I waited till the week before Team U to order - it was all waiting for me when I returned home. I highly recommend both the dark chocolate and white chocolate PB, the mocha is also very good. Hard to stop eating, and definitely not good for the waistline!

This was taken backstage just moments after I competed in the one-piece round (obviously). I find it so odd that I look entirely different on the stage in New York than I look backstage in regular light. It makes me say to myself that if the judges saw what is being presented in the photos, then I must have deserved the lower placing.
I honestly don't think my legs are going to differ in size too much for the USA's. I am doing mad amounts of cardio in preparation for Vegas, but I have mad amounts of muscle in my thighs and glutes. This is me. My body.

You should talk to the judges, and ask them for more feedback. They really love the attention, and it helps them to actually remember your face, body and name. You should also bring something nice (show off clothes) to wear after pre-judging, to create more interest.

Several compeititors were told by judges after the show that they were "too big" or "too muscular." I saw this coming: First, fitness was created for fbbers who didn't want to get "too big." When the bbing establishment decided the fitness girls were getting "too big" the figure category was created. Now the NPC and IFBB are worried that the figure girls themselves are getting "too big." It's obvious now that the NPC and IFBB no longer have any interest in traditional fbbing and would like their competitions to approximate beauty contests, featuring not women who look like traditional bbers but more like Hooter girls. It's a shame matters have reached such a state but they have. It's time for Manion and the Weiders to move on to beauty contests and completely give up their licenses to promote fbbing and leave those activities to men and women who believe in traditional fbbing, whose judging will reward women who have gotten very big, indeed, possibly even "too big." These amazing women, some of whom express their confusion about judging on these boards, deserve to have their incredibly intense and determined training and preparation be amply rewarded for their efforts. It won't do anymore for the judges/promoters (world-class conflicts of interest there also) to tell women who have, after months of dedicated dieting and training, have brought themselves to their resepecive physical peaks, that they have grown "too big. What an insult!! I'd like to see ALL the leading women at the next contest all come in at their biggest size yet and defy the judges to ignore them in favor of the NPC's new ideal fbber-an anorexic. The audience would boo the judges and hopefully chase them from the building, leading to a new day in women's bodybuilding.

[QUOTE=Jodi Leigh]I know. See, I can laugh or cry about this roller coaster ride of placings that the judges put me through, and the crying only smeared my make up and gave me a headache on Saturday, and I was still stuck in 12th place. At least the jokes exercise my abs and cheek muscles.QUOTE]
I know you compete to win Jodi, everyone does. But there is some merit in the thought that the journey is just as important as the destination. Whether you "win" or not, at the end of the day you're staying healthy and in shape, you are pursuing your goals, you look and feel great, and you have a legion of friends and fans that think you are DA BOMB!! I agree with the others that say just come in the way you feel the best about yourself. Screw the judges, you win the moment you step on stage.

Jodi -- I think you look great. Your shoulders are incredible. As far as bringing down your legs? I would not even stress over it. I brought mine down SO much and for what? The judges -- ugh.... now I want to build them back up. Muscular legs are a thing of beauty ;)

I had a talk with my webmaster last night, who is a great photographer as well--one who knows the technical side of photography, and we both feel that the lighting on the stage and the angle of the judges in accordance with our placement on the stage had a lot to do with the results of the show.
I was just scratching my head over and over, trying to figure out how I could look so different backstage as opposed to the photos of us on stage. How everyone could look so different. Jeez...even my face looked odd on stage! Not a single one of the photos is an accurate representation of the physiques walking around backstage. That's not a discredit to the photographers. It's a discredit to the set up of this show.
The only way for a girl to provide the "figure ideal" in the judges' eyes was if she came in with a very small lower body structure. Anything verging on a thicker, larger, more muscled leg and glute region left us looking blocky, thick, watery, and bottom heavy due to the particular lighting and the height of the stage. Many of us who fell in placings were comparing our bodies, seeing what similarities there were that created such plummeting. What was the one commonality? Bigger, harder, thicker quad development.
Add to that the fact that the one-piece is the starting point for determining the placings (based upon shape first and conditioning second), and the thicker thigh girls suffer since the one-piece only draws more attention to the legs.
I wouldn't pose this as an explanation if it were just me that looked different. But I saw so many of these girls up close and personal backstage. I know what they looked like in real life. I know what I looked like. I know what my friends and fellow competitors told me I looked like. And none of it matches with the photos, and I have a distinct feeling that none of it quite matched with what the judges saw.
I know it's all an illusion, but to this extent? Come on, now.
Wow. To go through months and months of work and to have lighting and stage height obliterate all of that. Wow.
I relate this to the many dressing room mirrors in various clothing stores. I walk into Gap Body a week out from a show, and I'm in heaven. I look gloriously good. I walk into Nordstrom's 30 minutes later, and I'm in tears. How in the heck do I have cottage cheese on my ass when I'm 6% bodyfat?? It's all in the lighting and the angles.
On a different note, it's taken me years to appreciate my legs...my genetics, and appreciate them today, I do. I have a history of squatting 250 lbs. at just 110 lbs. in weight, leg pressing over 600 lbs. at that same weight. I couldn't get these legs to come in much smaller without becoming a skeleton, and lord knows I'd still have a ghetto booty even if I were all bones.
I'm not competing at the USA's to win. Goals like that in figure only set you up for disappointment. I'm simply going to showcase a physique my fans and friends can be proud of. I'm know I'm damn proud of it.
Not a single girl should do a single thing to her body that she doesn't want to. Thank goodness I didn't succumb to steroid or growth hormone use simply because the head judge told me three years in a row that I was "too little."
Thank you, Tripper and Heathre, for your motivating comments! All the best to you!

Wow, The pictures really are misleading. For Example, Grace Rivera (top national competitor) in person her legs wer tiny!!! She looked great. The pics tell a different story. This is the first time I have ever noticed such a huge delta between real life and photos.
Jodi, see you in Vegas!! (100 pounds j/k)
Gene X - It was nice seeing you!!

You should talk to the judges, and ask them for more feedback. They really love the attention, and it helps them to actually remember your face, body and name. You should also bring something nice (show off clothes) to wear after pre-judging, to create more interest.
I respectfully disagree. No, they should not talk to the judges. They should come into a show exactly they way they want to and not stressing over changes or adjustments that judges recommend. Unfortunately, 7 judges will have 7 different opinions about figure. All too often, what the judges tell these girls at one event is the complete opposite of what they tell them at the next event. And talk to them because they like the attention? You're kidding right? What are you trying to convey?
As for wearing show off clothes after pre-judging to create more interest, I'm hoping you don't mean for the judges too. LOL.
Jodi Ghetto Butt Miller.........you keep your head up. Good things are just around the corner. :)

This is a money making business, and more competitors should talk to the judges, the photographers, contest promoters, to try to get feedback, because sometimes those conversations can lead to booth work, magazine layouts, guest posings and seminars. It is ok to compete, but to compete and ignore the money making part of the business, does not make sense. Monica Brant talks to anyone that wants to talk to her, and SHE IS THE QUEEN OF FITNESS, AND THE GRAND CHAMPION OF GETTING PAID!

You must not be an athlete. Yes Monica Brandt is making a few dollars. But for every Monica Brandt (and there is only one of her) there are about 4000 others spending money because they simply like the sport. If athletes are doing this for any other reason than because they enjoy the sport - I really feel sorry for them. Enjoy the sport, love what you do to your body, live a helathy life, and be a role model for those around you to live a healthier life - AND YOU HAVE WON!!! As far as working booths at a trade show. Do you really think that is what aspires these girls to work this hard? Come on!! Do you think they get paid alot to dress up in little outfits and cut protein bars and serve shakes? Think again..... They do it because they love it. Yes, I agree it is a money making sport.. But not for the competitors. . . . I respect the organizations that make the money due to it is their business just like our businesses. We are all here to make money in our respected professions. But figure, fbb, and fitness will never make you rich. Unlesss you are a Monica Brandt.

I am an athlete sitting 4 1/2 weeks out from a bbing show....why not ask the other women that do compete as well if they can make a living off of booth work and such...Most keep normal 9 to 5 jobs to be able to compete at the levels they do. My post was in regards to the MONEY that can be made in our chosen sport. I compete because I enjoy it...not for the POTENTIAL money that might be made.
I seriously think you read my post wrong. You should go re-read it.

Thanks for the kind words! It's amazing how different a physique can look in figure posing versus BB posing. I did a local BB show earlier this year and had a blast, so I am sure that I'll be back to BB comp sometime in the future. BB only gets better with age...

Thanks LOL! I've been told I have an accent, but I don't notice it of course. I am a southern beach girl (Virginia and Miami) transplanted to New England about 9 years ago, so who knows what kind of accent it is...some sort of hybrid southern/northern weirdness! :p

Not a athlete? I played Basketball, and ran cross country in high school, and college! I have a lot of really cool friends in the business, and whenever we talk, we talk about,"GETTING PAID". If this is a sport (???), then the athletes should get more than a placing, a trophy, and a few free pictures. Name a SPORT, that do not pay their athletes! I did not join this message board to argue with anyone, but I do have a insiders opinion!

she has a outstanding physique, and I am wondering why people are not talking about her. It is rare to see that type of physique, because most competitors lose some of their curves while dieting for a show.

Melissa is a good friend of mine, she did so well competing this year...hopefully we'll see her at the North American. Her 'curves' are a genetic gift but also the result of gymnastics, bodybuilding, Olympic Weightlifting and now figure training....all of which she trained and competed in at a very high level. Yes, she was an Olympic weightlifter! ...snatch, clean and jerk. Gene did some great photos of Melissa and you can also see her at www.muscleangels.com (http://www.muscleangels.com) see ya later...Annie

She would make a fine representative for the United States at the IFBB Worlds and I hope that she'll be the first American to win the overalls since Colette Nelson did in 2004 as well as Peggy Schoolcraft won in 1998 because her Symmetry & Proportion is Excellent and she would make a Wonderful IFBB pro.
Best of Luck to her at the IFBB Worlds and in the pro ranks. I would Love to see her compete at the Arnolds & the Olympia in the future. She'll do well for sure. :)
