hey Gerri - I've been slammed with other (non-fbb) stuff the past few weeks so I didn't get a chance to do a preview for Junior Nationals, but I'll try and pull one together for the USA. I love doing the contest previews - people seem to like them and it gets everyone excited about the show. Having said that, quizzing a bunch of fbbers about how they're going to look onstage when they're stressed and on low carbs can get, um, interesting. ;)

Prep is going well, although I broke my finger in the gym on Tuesday - so that made training a bit challenging this week. But you know the saying "where there's a will, there's a way..."

Hey Gene that's Good that you got the thread started, but I think you have to let folks know not to let things get out of hand just like last year's USA & Charlotte Pro Show threads and have a Good Healthy discussion without any disrespect to the Athletes, trainer/coaches, family members or their fans.

I also hope that the judges would be fair & impartial without any bias as well.

Other than that Good luck to all of the Athletes who's competing at the contest and may the best person win.

I hope it was all good stuff, Gene...lol!

You know, this was the first time since I stepped onto the NPC national level stage that I sat out the Junior Nationals--four years of doing that show! I instead decided to just barrel on through to the New York and Vegas shows. The dieting has been very steady since January. I've taken one full day off of workouts in about six months, and I am still having my cheat meals--two a week. We're thinking I can keep them in all the way to the show. One of the reasons for that is that I'm less than 9% bodyfat right now and still have four weeks to go!

The goal right now is maintaining my upper body size while allowing my legs to improve in terms of conditioning. If there's ever been a year when my symmetry has been at its best, this should be it.

Of course, anything can happen in four weeks, so we'll just have to wait and see what the final package that I bring to the stage looks like. I'm beginning to get excited!

My site is updated each week with progress pictures and some video clips from my leg workouts (not the most pristine quality since they're from my digital camera, but at least they're there!).

This is a bit off topic, but my good friend who was supposed to have accompanied me on this trip to Vegas has had to make a decision to remain at home due to a last minute crisis. It's something she couldn't help at all, and I feel so bad for her.

Needless to say, I am now without a roommate and am looking for someone to share a two double-bed room at AmeriSuites ($129 a night). This is one of the overflow host hotels. It has a refrigerator, microwave, and other items as well as free early check in and late check out. I fly in on Thursday and leave late Sunday.

Even though only one pro card is available here, I think this event will be stacked with talent. Newcomers and veterians alike will be battle it out to see who gets put on the national map bascially. As this contest seems to mostly serve as a prelude to the National Championship.

Melissa Dettwiller: Don't worry girl, you'll be a top contender for sure. :)

There were at least 4 FBBs of pro quality last year - the top 2 HWs Heather Policky and Sherry Smith,
and the top 2 LHWs, Amanda Dunbar and Elena Seiple.
Stunning physiques, complete packages. :star: :star:

Their top placings are a credit to the judges, though there was a lot of debate on who should have been first.

Also absolutely pro-quality :star: are Sheila Bleck, who has the further advantage of outstanding grace from her dance background, and Michele Neil, who IMHO dominated the 2005 Jr Nationals with a package of physique, figure and condition that lapped the field.

I just read that there is over 200 figure competitors. I know that is alot of money for the NPC.... but wayyyyy to many athletes for a fair judging. I do hope that the NPC decides to change the amount of athletes that are able to compete on the natl level. What does everyone else think??

So, as someone pointed out on another thread, I wasn't able to do the usual article previewing the USA. But here are my picks of some of the female bodybuilders (there are expected to be around 30 in total) to look out for this coming weekend in Vegas:

Lightweights: Not sure who is competing in this class. Anyone else want to drop some names?

Middleweights: My pick is Tina Chandler (http://www.ftvideo.com/genex/profiles/2005/tina_chandler.htm) of Houston, Texas, who was one of last year (http://www.ftvideo.com/genex/results_05/usa/)'s most impressive newcomers, taking second on her national-level debut behind behind Britt Miller. She has been working hard in the gym since then and told me recently: "I have made changes and I'm ready to do it!"

Light-heavyweights: Should be a tough class as usual, with Debbie Bramwell competing a week after winning a competitive light-heavyweight class at the Masters. Also look out for the return of Christine Sabo (http://www.ftvideo.com/genex/profiles04/sabo.htm) , who took second in this class in 2004 just after winning the overall at Junior Nationals. She's one of the hardest workers in the sport and has had some time off, so I wouldn't be surprised if she turns up with a completely different look. Melissa Dettwiller will also be up among the contenders.

Heavyweights: The big question is the same as last year - will Heather Policky be in shape? She's written in her journal (http://www.heather-policky.com/journal/journal.html) about what a tough time she's had during her prep, but she is still the one other competitors will be worrying about. Last year she wasn't completely on either but her incredible proportions won her the class ahead of the harder Sherry Smith.

Speaking of beautiful shape, Sheila Bleck will also be onstage in the heavyweight class in Vegas. I was surprised to see her place 11th at Nationals last November - I thought she should have placed higher. If she comes in slightly tighter than in Atlanta (and she tells us her prep has gone really well this time), she could win the whole show - especially with the emphasis the judges are putting on shape and structure.

Then there's the hottest new heavyweight on the scene, the extremely impressive Candy Canary (http://www.ftvideo.com/genex/profiles/2006/candy_canary.htm). At 5-foot-4 and 155 pounds Candy came out of nowhere to win the heavyweight and overall at the Emerald Cup. The USA will be our first chance to see Candy standing alongside national-level heavyweights - but I wouldn't be surprised if she makes the top three.

Also look out for Tina Zampa, who took third in the heavyweights last year, and Bev DiRenzo, who is looking as hard as ever in the pics she posted in her journal (http://beverlydirenzo.blogspot.com/). The surprise of the class could be if Junior Nationals heavyweight winner Kris Murrell decides to compete and comes in in shape.

I'm sure I've missed tons of people I should have mentioned - everyone feel free to add to this.

Damn straight Hans. Sheila's symmetry is just incredible. Guaranteed all eyes will be on Sheila. I have been to her chatroom(s) recently, and she looks phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal! Big shoulders, gorgeous v-taper, and a tiny waist. Her abs really stand out this year. Striated glutes, great definition. Beautiful looks and oozing with sex appeal! She is definitely, definitely tighter than in Atlanta. Hell ya I could continue!

I completely agree with you. I have been on the national stages a few times and I feel that there were way to many then (3 years ago). I feel that they can not possibly do everyone justice with the time that should be spent on evaluating physiques properly...Secondly, I think that the NPC should be more particular about who comes to these shows...no offense but let's be honest!! If you competed at a state level show(that happens to be a national qualifier) with just you and one other girl that hardley qualifies you for a national show--I have seen many girls with dimples on their behinds, not in shape and horrible stage presence that have (in my opinion) no business being there.
but overall I agree that there needs to be some sort of schedule change--maybe a West, Mid-west and East coast Pro qualifier for figure which could help a little...Just a thought

Its something I have been thinking for 5 years now.

WAY TOO MANY competitors are allowed to enter into the USA and Nationals.

How over 200 people can be allowed to cram one stage....is beyond me.... :headscrat

First of all there only needs to be one championship show of our country.
How can 2 different athletes be a "National" and "United States" champion in the same year. Both of those titles basically mean the same thing. Its stupid. The USA Championship is all you need....that way there is more prestiege to it because you have ONE true champion of our nation.

Then there needs to be a better qualification rule in place.
Since there are about 4 or 5 other "national" competitions on the schedule, they should make those events the ONLY qualifiers for the USA.
And take the Top 5 from those contests to create the line up for USA.
That way every athlete at the USA is a national proven competitor and you that makes for a better and more honorable championship event.

Of course I don't expect the NPC to do this because they don't care about the sport and its credibility. They only care about taking as much money from people as possible which why they let all those athletes compete in the first place.

Here are a few shots from around Vegas today. This morning was the late weigh-in, with a lot of the competitors everyone had been waiting to see showing up, including the top heavyweights. Without having seen everyone onstage yet, it looks like it come down to Heather Policky, Candy Canary and Sheila Bleck - who all look incredible from what we have seen.

At the weigh-in last night a lot of people were talking about Tina Chandler who looks amazing as Gene already said. She looks bigger than last year at this show when she took second in the middleweights - especially in the delts and arms - and is in awesome shape. At the weigh-ins last night everyone was talking about her. I don't when the last time was a middleweight won the overall at a national-level show, but Tina looked so good, you never know.

We're heading back to the host hotel now to see what's going on. More updates and pics later!

That wasn't exactly the case at the Masters Natiomals last week. But apart from this, Sandy's modus operandi has been to bias the judging of the heavyweights toward softness, but advise the judges to do the opposite in the lighter division(s).

But no matter how the judges factor softness versus hardness, Jason has a point. Candy Canary, up to this point, has not yet demonstrated a pro-level set of wheels. Scrutinize the legs, particularly the hamstrings, and this should be obvious. And remember, Candy is battling Heather Policky in this class.

At any rate, I wish all the athletes the best of luck. Tomorrow we wll learn the results.

Echo, I've only seen just a few photos of the Masters Nationals. The pics that I did see(mainly the Lt Hvy class), the females were pretty hard.
On Candy Canary...I never said she'd win her class. I just said she has the look that they seem to be rewarding in the Hwt class so far this year. Jason mentioned that he thought she may be too soft. Sorry, I meant the "look" as referring to just her conditioning only.

Damn straight Hans. Sheila's symmetry is just incredible. Guaranteed all eyes will be on Sheila. I have been to her chatroom(s) recently, and she looks phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal! Big shoulders, gorgeous v-taper, and a tiny waist. Her abs really stand out this year. Striated glutes, great definition. Beautiful looks and oozing with sex appeal! She is definitely, definitely tighter than in Atlanta. Hell ya I could continue!

These attributes, coupled with her posing (no equal) ensure she will do very well at this event. :banana: :banana: :banana: Hey Roman I agree and keep on continuing Good Buddy!!!!

I'll also chime in and say that a whole lot of the Ladies are oozing with Sex appeal as well, Amazon Lover will tell you that also. The more Sex Appeal on a Woman Bodybuilder/Fitness Woman, (especially in "Ripped to Shreds" contest shape) the better.

I'll also add that I'm glad that there's more than one National pro qualifier for the Women Bodybuilders & Fitness Women since the figure women have been turning pro at an alarming rate.

Thank God for the USa's, Team Universe, Masters Nationals, North Americans & The Nationals because there's a need for new pros to take Women's Bodybuilding & Fitness to another level. Wouldn't you agree Roman? I know I would Good Buddy. :cheers:

Great pics.....! I really like #133 look who is in the A class figure. She is a lot more muscular than the other girls but not extreme. From evaluating the physiques in the top callout......each girl is so different...some real lean, others soft but with great curves, some a lot more muscular than the girl next to them....Looks to me like the main determining factor is shape/genetics since the girls in the same callout are so different.

Ok - just back from the women's bodybuilding pre-judging and the figure two-piece. Gene will be posting some onstage shots and talk about the figure but in the meantime here's the lowdown on the female bodybuilders - and some audience shots.

In the lightweights it was all about Claire Rohrbacker-Connell who you all know from the board. She looked stunning - beautiful shape, with her delts popping out and an awesome v-taper, great condition, and beautiful presentation. The class was basically over as soon as she walked onstage.

In the middleweights Tina Chandler immediately stood out. She has definitely put on some size since last year, with her delts totally setting off her v-shape. She looked incredible when she hit a lat spread. I think she'll take it - and could even be in with a shot for the overall - but Jennifer Sedia of Texas (who works with Bonny Priest) looked awesome too.

The light-heavyweights is pretty hard to call. When the first group of six filed onstage, Christine Sabo immediately stood out in a bright red suit with improved shape, striated shoulders, a thick back and ripped legs. Debbie Bramwell looks awesome too - probably the thickest girl in the class. But Angie Salvagno - who probably has the best shape of the class but looked a little off when she stood in the line-up - exploded into life when she starting hitting poses. Karen Choat - another Bonny Priest protegee - also looked big and conditioned. My guess is that it's probably between Christine and Angie but any of them could win the class.

The heavyweights were all about Heather Policky, who looked incredible. It's a pretty competitive class but it looks like pretty clear that she has it again - it's just a question of whether she wins the overall this time and finally gets her pro card. Her upper body seems to be back up to where it used to be, which makes her look balanced with her huge legs than last year, when she looked a little bottom-heavy. When she stood on tiptoes and hit a lat spread, flaring her lats and quads, she totally dominated the stage. She is also in good condition - she was hitting leg poses with cross-striations in her quads which obviously the audience loved.

Along with Heather P in the first comparison were Michelle Neil (ripped), Sheila Bleck (great structure and thickness) and Nekole Hemrick (beautiful but probably still need a little more size). Candy Canary looked incredible too - at 5-foot-4 she is significantly shorter than most of the top heavyweights who are around 5-6 or 5-7 but she is also incredibly big and wide so it's pretty crazy seeing her standing next to them - but she may not be quite lean enough this time to make the top three. Tina Zampa and Gerri Deach look awesome too - definitely the deepest class of the show this time.

I have Melody Clere(b class) winning the overall for Figure. Cause out of all of the first callouts she looks the best, for what the judges want in figure right now..


But if the judges decided hey lets give the overall to the hard girl, they will give it to Meriza Goncalves in class.. In my opinion she is the best in the show..

Really not sure which way the middleweights will go. Angie had the best shape, Chris was the most complete and the the girl on the end (Karen Choat I think) was the biggest.

You must be dead tired coming from the UK for this show. Thanks for clarifying. Out of curiosity do you remember where Karen Tucker got called out in prejudging? Judging by the pics it looks like 3rd, but just wondering. That's a nice pic of Chris Sabo and her folks. I got to meet her and her husband at a photoshoot last year, and they were really nice people; a real pleasure to talk to.

After looking back at the pics, the overall is going to be really interesting. Any of the four class winners could actually win it - pretty unusual. Heather P is obviously the favorite but pound for pound, the best physique of the show could be Tina Chandler or 4' 11 3/4" Claire R-O'C.

There was a girl in my class at Nationals that was in both first callouts and she did not make top 5! And then I was in second callout in one round and got third overall on the scoresheet in that round...how in the heck does that happen??

BTW, I am so not saying that will happen to Jana...I am just still trying to figure out the judging and callouts and what it all means :p
