Great pics Buildy. Nice to see Iris there - she is doing various appearances around Germany. I think the third pic is Cornelia Brandt - very impressive up and coming German heavyweight.

A buddy of mine just told me that Iris' manager is a Swiss gentleman and that they're currently doing a European tour. That's cool and makes perfect sense. After all, no one likes bodybuilding in the U.S.

'Up and coming'? She's the reigning Ms. Universe (NABBA)! I think that's the pinnacle, but could be wrong about that.

I can't believe they're still doing those ridiculous group posing demonstrations. They're horrible! They have this huge stage sitting there empty and then all at once (about 2 times a day on Sat & Sun), they throw 15 people out there and tell them to start posing. They could easily give the fans a much better show if they just let each performer have 1-2 minutes to pose individually. They could even take the added step of adequately lighting the stage.

I guess that's Roland who's managing Iris.

Gotta get out to FIBO some day!

Here you're wrong ,my friend.
Each performer has as many mins they need to pose individually.
At the end they throw the whole bunch on stage to do a little posedown.
But to my big shame I missed Cornelia Brandt & Yvonne Schleip individually posing because I had nice chat with Desiree Dumpel about NABBA euros next month.

Yep NABBA Ms Universe 2004 BUT NOT the NABBA which is held in England,it's a different NABBA,very confusing.

You gotta hurry because each year less bodybuilders male & female.
This year almost no IFBB competitors.
But I heard that next year Weider stand will be back at FIBO.

Well, that's good to hear - that's definitely an improvement over the old days. Except for one thing - no one ever puts up pictures of the individual performances. :(

Yeah, the whole NABBA thing is weird. There's a NABBA and then there's a NABBA-International, or something like that. And then I've heard rumors that there might be a third NABBA out there that is actually an offshoot organization being run by a rogue promoter who was upset about losing control of something.

I demand order!

It seems that many of their titles have the same names. When I contacted NABBA-International to ask about the 2005 Universe, they told me it would be in Germany, but that the date had not yet been confirmed. "Probably the last weekend in November" was the info I received.

This almost makes me want to go start up my own IFBB. :D

Buildy, did you ever go to FIBO when they used to hold physique contests there that weekend? I heard that the entire event was much better during those years.

Gene, I recommend going to see it at least once, but be warned - it's not like anything you're used to here in the States. I should probably do a full thread on this at some point, but there are a few key differences between FIBO and 'everything else':

1) At any given moment, 50% or more of the attendees might be smoking. It makes an indoor expo absolute hell for anyone who doesn't like cigarette smoke.

2) You'll only see a handful of female bodybuilders there, taking into account the crowd, plus stage performers. The year I went, maybe two were being used as booth workers, which I understand is about typical for this show. And those who do come might only visit for one day.

3) On that note, it's a 4-day affair, but only 2 days are completely open to the public. Thurs-Fri are primarily for the suits. It's actually somewhat impressive to witness the wheeling and dealing that goes on - a fitness trade show where people are dressed in suits, sipping champagne, and brokering $500,000 deals before lunch.

The first 2 days offer nothing much for the fans, however, so I pretty much just walked around.

4) The venue is huge. Some people have estimated that it's probably 10 times bigger than the Arnold (2000-2002), but saying that it's at least triple the size of the ArnEx would not be all that far off.

5) The exhibits there are seriously impressive. When you're talking about displays from Nike, Reebok, etc., you know they're putting the powder pimps to shame. I cannot remember how many vendors they have, but it's a lot more than the Arnold.

6) Although there are a lot more booths/exhibits, there are *fewer* fit women working them. I didn't understand that at all.

7) They have several performance stages, of varying sizes. I counted at least 4 or 5 and there always seemed to be something going on somewhere...except for the big "All Stars" stage, which only rarely had anything on it.

8) Did I mention that everywhere you went, you were breathing cigarette smoke? That was really hard to tolerate. Really hard.

9) There was no real after-expo 'hanging out'. I never got the impression that there was any central hotel or restaurant or anything else for the FIBO - at the close of the show each day, everyone would just scatter back to wherever they were 'living' during the weekend. I don't think many hotels were within walking distance. The closest place I found was a 15-minute train ride away. Maybe it was a little longer, can't remember now (Mannheim), but it was a quaint little town where it seemed I was the only FIBO-goer. There's a subway stop right there at the venue, so that was especially convenient.

10) Find a native speaker to spend the day translating for you - it'll enable you to get a lot more done.

How close are you to Cuxhaven, Germany? That's the name of the town they told me...about 470km from Aachen. But I think I spoke with NABBA #2. lol

Hey Hans,

I did a photo shoot with Conny Brandt at the FIBO. I will have her profile on my site (www.andysmusclegoddesses.us) soon. Just wanted to let you know.

The FIBO was good but definitely not as good as in the past. There were less competitors and definitely not many working at a booth. But still I think it is worth to go. It's still a huge event.

Yeah, if you're in the business, you definitely need to see it at least once.

Buildy, has the show been in Essen the last 7 years or did it switch to Köln at all during that time? Essen has some cool things to see that a GeneX might enjoy. :)

What about the autumn FIBO? I believe it was/is held in Stuttgart. Has that been held more than once? I never heard anything about the first one from a few years ago.

Cool. I've heard that the physique contests they used to have there were pretty huge events. Did you ever get to see any of those?

Essen is somewhat like the Columbus of Germany - when FIBO comes to town, it's the only event in town.
