View Full Version : Equipment (no not that kind)

I just thought it would be cool to see what camera brands, lenses, etc., etc. everyone uses.
I'll start.
Nikon d50
Nikon 70-300mm f/5.6
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX (just bought this one)
Tamron 28-80 f/3.5
.

You use the D50 mostly for everything?
JTx

Mostly. I had a d70 that met with an untimely demise so did a bit of research and decided on the d50.
Well... wait... when you say for "everything" ... I don't use it as a turkey baster or anything.

I use Canon gear - mostly the 1D family of bodies and a 20D as backup. Primary lenses are 50mm, 24-70mm and 70-200
One thing though, it's not the equipment really, it's the person who's shooting. Of course having decent gear helps above a certain level.

That's a very interesting and timely thread post JT. While I have no doubt most of you have memorized this info, for the remaining few who may have missed it, I have a detailed account of this very topic in the most recent issue of my newsletter (http://www.johnstutz.com/issue.asp?2006,april) in the section entitled Shoot Camp (1 of 3). Plus, I have added commentary that may also be mildliy interesting. It also echos Gene's sentiments about the equipment not being everything.

I have used a large assortment of equipment over the years.
Namely,
A Kiev 88
A Mamiya C220
A Nikon FM
A Nikon FM2
A Nikon F801s
A Nikon F601
A Nikon F90X
A Pentax K1000
A Pentax Spotmatic
A Canon 10D on occasion
I am thinking about purchasing a Fuji S3 and either A Nikon D200 or a D2X in the future.

I have a D70s coming but may change it if things work out right to the D200 or maybe the 30D. Depends on the deal I can work out. I love the D70s. Getting the 70-300 and the 28-70 with it.
Right now I am shooting with what I could get when I jumped back into this and it is an amazing camera actually.
Konica-Minolta Dimage Z5. It shoots amazing pics. I shoot it in manual most of the time, or aperture priority. The zoom is fantastic. I have other photogs amazed at the quality I get from it but I had to learn to use it correctly.

This is an excellent article. One of the first question usually is how many magepixels?? Marketing! I was told by a fitness photographer that I needed to get the highest MP camera possible to shoot magazine work, and he scorned a 5-6 level. Walt Ostarly shoots with a D70s for most of his work and it is amazing stuff. He used a D200 I think on occasion but favors his 70. John's own work is great, and you get poster size from 5.5?

There are advantages to having lots of megapixels... print quality is most assuredly not one of them. Obviously, there are limits -- you can't make a high-quality poster from half a megapixel. But it does not take gargantuan file sizes to make excellent prints. I showed two large prints to a couple of film printers that I met during the Arnold in March. They examined my prints closely and both stated that they were highly comparable to anything they could reproduce in a professional film lab. Mind you, this has no bearing on my ability to shoot. It is simply a testament to the quality of print from my Epson printer, which I can't hardly take credit for.
The two prints in question are 13"x20" with 5.6mp, and 13"x21" with 5.2mp. If anyone would like to see them, I can bring them and several others with me to the NPC Cal Camps this weekend and you can see for yourself what can be done with around 5.5mp. All these prints that I made for the Arnold were simply opened and sent directly to the printer with no adjustments whatsoever, so I suspect that if I had put forth even the slightest effort, I could achieve even better results. But what I have is suitably impressive nonetheless.
And since this thread is about equipment we use, I'll add that my prints are made with an Epson Stylus Pro 9800 on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm.

Yeah the megapixel thing is overrated as is pretty much any discussion about gear vs technique and such. Of course there are bare minimums but how many people are outputting really large size prints? We output up to 30x40 and have done so with smaller resolutions (since back then we only had three) and there's good software to uprez too.

I know yur 20D is about 8.2 isn't it? What were you using for some of the 30x40?

It was actually in the days of the D30 which was 3MP that we enlarged a lot of the shots. Our client used them for advertising shots too. There are some good interpolators out there to rez stuff up like Fred Miranda and Genuine Fractals.

There is a digital camera made by sinar which allows the photographer to take either 35mm or medium format camera images with one sensor. The Sinar can use both Nikon and Carl Zeiss (medium format) lenses.
I believe the camera has a 36 megapixel sensor (I may be wrong).

The only one I know of that is close to that is the new Hasselblad. The H2D39 is a 39 MP DSLR. What are you going to do with files that large??? Your hard drives would be filled in no time at all. It also has auto color correction with every shot. No telling what the price tag is!!
Here is the link. Hasselblad H2D39 (http://www.hasselbladusa.com/)

I'm using a Sigma SD10 with a 18-50 2.8 zoom and a 70-200 2.8 zoom lens. The 70-200 is my favorite by far, it makes excelent pictures.

I havent tried it. I bought a filter for my old camera (a sony consumer model) but never used it. This is a shot from 2 days ago with my session with Noreene Castillo. (She was one of the competitors from the Cals)

This looks like it was kind of bright sunlight. Any reflector at all? 180 @ f4 , or maybe somewhat cloudy? Though I see the sunlight on her hair on the upper left. Do you ever use polarized filters?

BUMP and I have to use 10 characters. LOL
Going to bump this again as I have a big bikini shootout coming next weekend. Should I get this filter?

Yes get a polarized filter. The circular polarizers are easier to use. Makes the skies more blue and can add contrast.
