    your friend,

    Monica Martin.
This is such sad news. She was in attendance at the 2003 Nationals in Miami, and I had the pleasure of talking to her for awhile before being admitted to the night show. She was very pleasant and quite engaging. I am shocked by this news and truly saddened. It was mentioned that the news was not unexpected. Was she sick? Does anyone know the unfortunate circumstances behind this tragedy? I feel so sorry for her family and friends, because this is a great loss. I offer my sincerest condolences to her family.

    Respectfully,
    Joe

From what I was told by CJ (the suitmaker) she was in the hotel room following the Southern States this weekend (in which her husband competed at) and she had a stroke.

My deepest condolences go out to her family, this is such a sad time in bodybuilding.......
    Be safe everyone,

Here are several excerpts from people who last saw Fannie:

    Re: R.I.P. Fannie Barrios

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got news from a friend who spoke to her husband that she passed away last night in her hotel room from a blood clot ( anuersym?).
I only spoke to fanny last night at the Southern States as I'd made a point to talk to her as we compete together and her english had much improved and so am in shock right now.
This is the second friend of mine within a year in their 40s of whom passed away and I am very sad by it.
My love to Alex and everyone whom cared about her .

    I am so sorry

Wow...I like Joanna, just saw her Saturday night at the Southern States show...she looked like her normal self...did not look sick or anything. How sad. My condolences to her husband and family. We always seemed to be on the same flights when flying out to shows, as I believe she lived in Miami. RIP.

This news is most distressing. I too was at the Southern States and spent time talking with Fannie & Alex. I have known them for years and when my wife & I first moved to South Beach - they welcomed us and were so nice. I always went out of my way to say hi and see what the both of them were up to. Fannie leaves a ~14 year old daughter - what a shame. Alex and her just opened up a new gym too (took over the old Idols Gym off of Lincoln Road) from what I understand - Fannie was so proud she told me this past weekend.

    What a freggin shame.

    ****!

What a terrible Monday..........first Peter Jennings, now this?

I've been a fan of hers for a while. I swear, they "breed" them differently down in South America. All these kills with these killer physiques; Fanny, Yaxeni, Betty, Monica Martin, etc.........

So sorry to hear that. And, it's actually quite scarey if you really sit and think about it.

Maybe I shouldn't be counting down the days to the show- Maybe I'm counting days off my life if I do that?
