I think the general public is already 'aware' of female bodybuilders(ing). I dont think it would change peoples' perception too much though. Maybe a few related stories about girls who lift weights in the news or something..
Specifically, what do you mean by 'real shot in the arm for the community'?

I can never help noticing that, when something stops being really, really big in the public eye, people (people who are normally more imaginative than this) act like it's disappeared COMPLETELY. And (though I've never heard this), I'm always guessing that's how it is with FBBs. When it stopped being a trendy subject (between the lovers AND the haters of it), the haters of it probably almost assumed that all those women STOPPED doing it (again, if something stops being HUGE in the public eye, even the HATERS of it seem to think it no longer exists). So, the bits of publicity I've seen in the past 1-2 years, like the Keith Ablow episode and Supersize She, have been encouraging, because there seems to be almost no such thing as A LITTLE trendy - instead, the thing becomes VERY trendy (again, thanks to both the people who like it and the people who DON'T). So, maybe FBBs are coming back into the public eye, and a She-Hulk movie, and Numenlad's story, could really help with that.

yes, I understand the expression. What I'm getting at is that I dont think a she-hulk movie will bring more people to the shows or get (a whole lot) more girls into the gym to lift weights. So what other kind of boost to the community would something like this create? Other than just a trendy awareness for a week or so?

Prior to Johnny Weismuller taking over the role, Tarzan was indeed played by bodybuilders, like Gordon Scott. Then of course there's Steve Reeves, who did like two dozen films. Hell, for that matter there's Santo (who's as much of a bodybuilder in the 50s as Stallone was in the 80s). I think the point that a couple of people have tried to make is that the public does already know about bodybuilding and female bodybuilding and if more of them were inclined to care, they would. This is a fringe activity. Cultish, if you will. We can all ask each other why these ladies aren't more popular and "respected" until we're blue in the face (and it seems like we often do) but it does seem that if the public was interested in seeing more female bodybuilders, all they have to do is look. Is this going to be a big budget film? A summer blockbuster as "Hulk" (2003)was intended to be? In my opinion, it would be a very tough sell to get a major studio behind a "She-Hulk" project. Bottom line is, you have to have a female with star power to put butts in theatre seats. It just ain't going to happen based on your scenario. I personally can't think of a current actress who number one, would want the role and number two, who could maybe make it fly. And I really don't think She-Hulk would have mass appeal.

It would probably be a woman who was big but not muscular. Hard to think of who fits the bill in an ideal that would please everybody?

Jamie Reed.
Intelligent, tall, gorgeous, buxom, muscular... What more does Hollywood need? |

She looks like a plain ol figure competitor to me. I thought you were referring to a hollywood actress. All I know is that Deb Bramwell should play wonder woman in a movie. |

If hollywood was to do a she-hulk movie, it would be done as a comedy. And IMO, it could be a pretty funny movie if done right. "My super-ex girlfriend" was pretty good, actually. (Parts of it hit a little too close to home, but i digress. lol)

I said this on another site (and maybe here, too), but Lynn McCrossin has a real "comedy actress" way about here (I only know one of her videos, but it really comes across there). So what you said made me think of her. I understand she left bodybuilding and related things for a time, but if she's back in "circulation," that would be an idea.

Are you sure? With a bodyfat that low boobs that big are rare. If they are than that is one lucky lady. |

Haha, Tre... all i can say to finding this thread is to quote Seinfeld... "they're real, and they're spectacular" Or so i've been told ;-) Besides, anybody who knows me knows i'd rather spend my money snowboarding, skiing, windsurfing, or on the new kite surfing gear i have my eye on ;-) |

Nah, the only place for female bodybuilders in Hollywood is as villains/freaks.

There are always SOME exceptions to that (though maybe not too many). I've mentioned it before, but there was Joanie Laurer's character on 3rd Rock, who was a sort of comical "gentle giant (ess)". And it's kind of a short step from that to a "misunderstood" destructive character. Of course, if it were a FEMALE character (even more than with a MALE), there would be a lot of lame bodybuilder jokes from people (either in the audience or in the actual STORY). I keep thinking of that Simpsons episode a few seasons ago, where Marge becomes an FBB (!), and goes on a kind of violent rampage. To many Simpsons fans, it must have seemed like one more case of that show clutching at straws for ideas in the past several years, but to FBB fans, it would've been irritating in OTHER ways. So I think a She-Hulk movie, with an FBB, COULD avoid the bad jokes, though I don't know if it WOULD.

Sorry, I do not agree -
There were and are - and will be film productions that can be set up with physically strong women (like Lara Croft, 3 angles for charly, some space, fantasy, adventurer films and fight films ...). Instead of taking a real muscular women (Fitness, figure or fbb) an actrice will be trained for half a year to show some muscle - but not to much. As soon as the film is finished she will tune down, so her "normal" fans are not to shocked ... The 90ies were the best time for bb s and fbb s - but may be some years will be a revival of muscles. What public would like to see a she-hulk film - how you imagine, a she-hulk film will be realized - an win prizes, would bes seen by millions of people that dislike to much muscle at women. There are beautiful girls in the world of fitness - maybe even some of these could be good actors - but when they try to get in the mainstreem business ad bigger productions they will tone down do get a better response from the people and to be more accepted. Tre has proposed a beautiful women - Jamie Reed - but there are lots of people that would complain about her "too muscular" body. The view on muscular bodies in the world is different from most men and women here in this little space - but let us hope there will be a change of mind and some wonder ... Claus |

Thanks Claus - to add to that particular point, i worked with a photographer last summer to submit some of my soft, toned down photos to Oxygen - their response was that i was 'too big'...
The year before, i was sent on an audition for a commercial where the director requested a 'bodybuilder'. I went, thinking i was going to be WAY too small, only to see them pick a girl that made me look like a giant beast as their 'bodybuilder'. You forget these things are aimed at the masses... |
